The Florence Housing Authority held an active shooter and safety training Wednesday for about 80 of its employees at their Church Hill apartments in Florence.

A seasoned Florence police officer talked with the group about the need to be more vigilant of their surroundings.

He presented slides and demonstrations on ways to be safe at the apartment complexes where they work.

The Florence Housing Authority's Director Clamentine Elmore said she wanted the training to make sure her employees won't be caught off guard in the event of a crisis situation.

"You never know what's going to happen. We just deal with a lot of folks, in the community: Our residents, their families and others. And we wanted to make sure that our employees, I wanted to make sure that our employees, are safe or feel like they are in a safe environment," said Elmore.

The authority has offices in McColl, Cheraw and Marlboro County.

The organization's website says it's mission is "to promote adequate and affordable housing, economic opportunity and a suitable living environment free from discrimination."
